  • What do you think about these books as recommended reading for children about the life of the president?

Posted by admin on March 31st, 2010 and filed under horizon church | 9 Comments »

The Dept. of Education expects your kids to read books on the life of Barack Obama before the monumental speech on September 8th. Here are a few exerpts from the books they expect your kids to read – "Barack Obama: Son of Promise, Child of Hope" and "Barack". You can read more exerpts by clicking on the link below. What do you think, should these books about our president be read by children? Why or why not. Thanks

"Ever since Barack Obama was young, Hope has lived inside him. From the beaches of Hawaii to the streets of Chicago, from the jungles of Indonesia to the plains of Kenya, he has held on to Hope. Even as a boy, Barack knew he wasn’t quite like anybody else, but through his journeys he found the ability to listen to Hope and become what he was meant to be: a bridge to bring people together."

"His mama, white as whipped cream; his daddy, black as ink…"

"He was there in Chicago because he cared about these people. They were his family. People in Kenya were his family. Indonesians were his family. And no matter where he was, the world was his home. And who he was could be summed up in one word: loveable."

"When Barack wasn’t studying he liked to jog along the Hudson River. He couldn’t help but notice the river of hurt and hate and history that separated blacks and whites. Being both, he could not take sides. Don’t worry, said Hope. I will be your bridge. In time you will be the bridge for others."

"When his classes came to an end, he raced to Chicago to join hands with the church, to learn new lessons: Not how to be black or white, but how to be a healer, how to change things, how to make a difference in the world."

"On the horizon, at the dawn of a new age, there appeared a man who would be the embodiment of (MLK’s dream), a presidential candidate whose very being was a bridge that joined nations.
But before he could join nations, he had to find a spiritual home, and he did under Reverend Wright’s Leadership at Trinity:

There, swept up in the waves of their singing, with tears on his cheeks, he knew why he was there. He knew who he was and he knew where he belonged"
    http://www.puma08.com/2009/09/02/sept-8th-here-are-two-of-the-books-on-obama-your-kids-are-expected-to-read/

I have heard some of the Reverend Wright’s leadership, and I do not care for it. People always try to rewrite history, often while it is being made, and that is what this stuff is all about.

I do not care what color a person is but I do care about what they attempt to force on me, especially if it is against what I believe, and Obama is entirley to far to the left for many of us. The bridge he is bringing is not hope, it is tareing apart our country and totally changing the foundation, and that is not acceptable.

No child should have anothers agenda pushed on them.

If you want to better know Obama, read the books he wrote himself.

Am I on the right track here? I have a little "theory" I’d like an opinion on..?

Posted by admin on March 31st, 2010 and filed under horizon evolve | 2 Comments »

I’ve spent the past three years watching documentaries, network news, independent news, conspiracy theories.. I’ve read books, magazines, seen -every- TED talk, listen to every religious/atheist debate on youtube, read the Old Testament, the New testament and the Quran.

I’ve come up with a proposal to help humanity evolve as a whole and meet the demands of the 21st century and I’d love to hear your thoughts. This may seem a bit longwinded, may come across as a rant — but if you have 5-10 minutes to spare hopefully it will be worth it.

I feel that the problems facing the world today can be summed up as an attempt to make a delicious pizza:

    1. THE CRUST
    ———————-

No true pizza can be called a pizza without a solid, tasty crust. In this instance, lets tackle the issue of our planet. The majority of scientists today claim that global warming is a man made disaster lurking on the horizon with symptoms already showing up today. The minority believe that global warming is inevitable. I agree with both.

The problem with the global warming theory is that the answer always seems to involve the human race making sacrifices, living life in a simpler, humbler way. I think that that’s the reason why so many people brush it off. Who wants to give up a chance at the good life.. that luxury car.. that amazing HD screen.. it’s not like they’re telling us we need to work less hours. The average human being works until their retirement. And no job is easy, by definition, most jobs are tasks. We’re a species that loves being rewarded, pampered and spoiled. There’s nothing wrong with that.

The solution henceforth isn’t really attractive when we’re asked to spend less, consume less, travel less or erect crude contraptions in our backyard that produce minimal quantities of alternative energy. A better approach would be the frame of mind that distinguishes the "X-Prize" foundation.

Science is not always a burning topic on the layman’s daily ritual of work, family and bills. Many TED talks showcase brilliant ideas and theories, but their funding is absurdly minimal at best.

The way to make a fantastic crust would be to create a transparent think tank based community of scientists, working against the clock, to create ATTRACTIVE ways to create solutions for our resource based way of life. A few examples would be; a modern car so luxurious and beautiful even the wealthiest people would covet. Solar panels that are smaller, more efficient, cheaper and less intrusive.

Many of the most revered breakthroughs in the history of mankind came from extreme action; long, hard hours. A vision. Determination. Funding.

We are spending too much money in other questionable areas that can be relocated to science.

A final thought regarding the importance of acting NOW, with extreme measures, is something my dad told me a few weeks ago. He’s a professor of speech pathology doing a world tour of lectures. I emailed him, asking him how wonderful it would be to achieve a breakthough and help millions of people all over the world.. his response, which is one we unfortunately hear too often these days, is that science takes many many years and he’ll be lucky to have a tiny improvement in his lifetime. I’m sorry, but that isn’t taking extreme measures. That’s the apathy of an institution without sufficient funding and resources.

A counter to that would be the war in Iraq. When a few highi ranking officials believe that an enormous and costly campaign in a foreign country is important — you won’t see people taking baby steps.

Which brings me to my next point:

    2. THE CHEESE
    ————————-

    Religion. Ignorance. Faith. Dogma. Creed.

One thing that always astounded me from watching people like Hitch or Dawkins debating is the circular logic to the debates themselves.

The atheists always have the answers to the questions. The literal, factual, peer reviewed data. The religious proponents will always, without fail, resort to the old or new testaments and to the Quran. I won’t waste anymore time making this point (you have to reach this conclusion by yourselves), but there’s a reason Mr. Dawkins refers to people that accept evolution and realize the phallacy of god and religion "Brights".
It takes courage, commitment, self reflection, a desire to know the truth and gobs of humility to leave the religious mindset — but the payoff is worth it. You get an accurate perspective on life.

The problem with religion is, in this day and age, simply this: it takes funding away from science and incorrectly "educates" an entire generation of human beings. a 13 billion year old galaxy, the big bang, evolution and natural selection can all be scientifically proven. It’s as simple as that. Look at the amount of money religion attracts. All religions. It’s in the tens, even hundreds of billions. Has that changed the reality of starving people in Africa? Has it done anything to really promote

A nice little theory you have :)

what bands are/were popular at your high school?

Posted by admin on March 31st, 2010 and filed under horizon high school | 5 Comments »

The most popular at mine would probably be:
    Suicide Silence
    Whitechapel
    Bring Me The Horizon
    A Day to Remember
    MGMT
    Rise Against

Excluding the top 20/40 sh!t, that’s what seems to be the most liked by people at mine. The only tolerable bands on there are MGMT and Whitechapel. Sure there’s a lot more, I just posted what I see most often on shirts around the school.. So.. What about you?
oh, and i forgot Insane Clown Posse… Which is also terrible music.

I was in high school in the late 90s/early 00’s
Boy bands like Nsync and Backstreet Boys were popular with girls. Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera were really popular.
Rap was really popular, especially southern rap and Eminem. Eminem was probably the most popular with people at school. Just about everyone had a copy of "The Marshall Mathers LP".
Nu-Metal was popular. Especially Korn and Limp Bizkit. Almost everyone liked Korn and Limp Bizkit actually except for preps. Hell even a lot of preps liked Limp Bizkit (preps hated korn though, thought they were too weird)
People actually thought that Fred Durst was cool back then lol
Country, because I live in the south and we have a lot of rednecks. Pop/Country too because the school was filled with preps that tried to be "country".

Searching for a $1000ish Treadmill for Weightloss?

Posted by admin on March 31st, 2010 and filed under horizon treadmills | 1 Comment »

    Hey there,

I’m looking to lose some serious weight. Right now, I’m a guy that weighs about 225lbs, and my doctor and I agreed that 170lbs would be more reasonable for my stature. I’m in my 20’s and looking to get a treadmill. I used to have a Nordic Track treadmill, but that broke after about 6 years of my family’s consistent use. I’m a grad student living in an apartment, and I’ve not much money to spare.

Anyways, I was looking at the Sole F63. I’ve heard it over and over that you can’t find a decent treadmill under $1000, but that doesn’t mean much when I don’t have more than $1000 to spend. I was originally looking at the Horizon T1201 at Dick’s Sporting Goods, but once I hopped on the Sole F63, it just felt more stable and of higher quality. I’ve read reviews that state the F63 is only good for walking and light jogging, and that it’s not suited to running. To be honest, right now I probably won’t be running all that often, but as I get in better shape over the next year or two, I’d want a treadmill that can at least pretend to keep up. Don’t really need all the fancy programs, speed and incline settings are all I really /need/. A estimate of calories burned would be nice too. I want it to work for at least four years (ie, until I’m out of grad school) without any serious problems. So, anyways, will the F63 suffice? Does anyone have any other recommendations for a treadmill under $1000?
Does anyone have an opinion that isn’t an advertisement?

Nordic Track Commercial 1500. Get the one at Costco, it’s cheaper.than anywhere else and it’s a great treadmill.

what is the even horizon of a black hole?

Posted by admin on March 31st, 2010 and filed under horizon | 3 Comments »

Explain what is meant by the event horizon of a black hole. What happens to the event horizon as the black hole gathers more mass? Explain.

The event horizon is the point of no return when it comes to being stuck in the gravity well of a black hole. Once you pass this boundary in space, moving farther into the black hole is as inevitable as moving forward in time, and the two are actually one in the same. As the black hole gathers more mass over its life, the event horizon will grow larger in radius.

need a little help/advice on making a decision about taekwondo and mma. what should i do?

Posted by admin on March 31st, 2010 and filed under horizon fitness | 2 Comments »

Ok so i’ve been doing taekwondo for about two and a half years now, im four ranks (or a year and a bit) off black belt. i do love taekwondo, its great fun and sparring is most enjoyable. its not a mcdojo as we are trained by a korean man with a 8th degree black belt in both WTF stlye taekwondo and Hapkido. I love the people and my master at the dojang and really wanted to get black belt.

but at the same time, i love all martial arts and want to expand my horizons to others. i also love mixed martial arts and ufc etc etc and often have full contact mma matches in the backyard (lol). so I recently discovered that then next town over has an mma gym. it has classes in mauy thai, kickboxing, BJJ and strength and fitness (which i am very interested in as i have alot of trouble putting on any weight and/or muscle). ontop of that the mma gym costs 25 a week with unlimited access (upto 15 classes a week, not to mention you can probobaly use the gym anytime as long as its open between classes). which is WAY better compared to taekwondo’s $15 per lesson once a week with no real facilities (we do it in a school hall/ indoor b-ball court) not to mention gradings cost 50 each and u need to pay 55 for insurance once a year.

so my dilema is i cant afford $40 a week to do mma AND taekwondo. yet i still do like taekwondo and dont want to "betray" my master and dojang. but mma is so much cheaper and teaches so much more.. WHAT SHOULD I DO??

and plz no answers telling me how "unneffective" tkd is etc etc.

I’ve been practicing a verity of martial arts for about 15 years…I did tae kwon do for 5 years. my recomendations are as follows

considering continuing tae kwon do untill you hit black belt
ask your master and tell him your feelings if you dont like MMA he might let you back as you where no harm done.

consider what martial arts like…I’ve studied, varity of styles from others, books, seminars, masters, and watching them performed…

what I have found is that all the basics are pretty much the same…front kick, round house, jab, reverse punch…almost every martial arts style has theses, and almost every martial arts style does them the same way.

as you get into more advance techniques you find, that tactics and mentality change. you also find that certain masters stress certain attributes, like speed, or counters, or blocks.

I’ve found that MMA schools usally lose some of what martial arts use to be and focus on combat, quick and to the point.

you have to ask yourself what you get from martial arts and what you want to get from it.

personally it’s about mind body and spirit. it’s about becoming me, and expressing myself fully through my discipline. my current system has everything I am looking for and then some.

so before switching ask yourself "WHAT DO I WANT?"

this will help you decide, you are not betraying your master by leaving…but you maybe betraying yourself by staying. you dont’ have to settle…5 years from now do you want to stay "stuck with someone for loyalty" or do you want to say "I found and stuck with a style that made me the best I can be"

(granted you might not use those exact words…:D)

the point is, you walk the path of the warrior…how you walk is up to you…the title of master is one earned from each student…if it doesn’t fit you bow respectivilty and move on…PERIOD…if not…you stay
